In the medieval times, knights obeyed a strict code of chivalry. Somehow that the etiquette changes over the years, but just for education’s purpose, here’s a some rundown of traditional social graces that may be still applicable till date. Practice them and you will impress!
- A gentleman walks on the curb side of the sidewalk with the lady away from the road to prevent her from being splashed by passing cars.
- Gentleman rise when a lady enters or leaves a room or when she leaves or returns to the table.
- The gentleman walks ahead of a lady coming downstairs.
- A gentleman may hold a door open for a lady to pass through first.
- A gentleman allows a lady to enter and exit the elevator first and holds the door to prevent it from closing on her.
- A gentleman follows the lady to their table in the restaurant and steadies her chair as she sits.
- In movies, theaters or sport events, the man allows the woman to walk ahead of him into the row, the man will locate the seat and he sits on the aisle. If two or more couples attend together, the women sit between the men.
- When driving a car, a gentleman unlocks the passenger door from the outside, helps the lady to her seat, then closes the door before opening his own. He also gets out first on arrival to help her from the car. (Note according to dating lore, if the woman reaches over and unlocks the man’s door before he gets to it, she likes him.) If the woman is the driver, the man still helps her in before taking his passenger seat.
